What is the Free Bible Version?

The Free Bible Version is a new translation into modern English from the standard Greek text. Its intent is to be as faithful to the original meaning without being awkward or misleading. The style is contemporary English without using slang or fashionable colloquialisms, speaking to our modern society in a way people will understand.

This is an ongoing project that expects change and development. The initial posting will be of version one, with further revisions to come. You are encouraged to copy and share this resource, subject to the limitations of the license. It is provided under a Creative Commons license that allows free use and dissemination provided that:

1. Attribution is given--in other words, it is identified as the Free Bible Version
2. The text is not changed.
3. It is not published for profit.

The Free Bible Version is a project of Free Bible Ministry,
a not-for-profit organization incorporated in the state of Maryland

Introduction to the Free Bible Version

Why another translation? That’s the usual question-for there are many modern English translations out there. So another one may seem superfluous!

But the Free Bible Version is different. In just about every case, you’ll find that no modern version is free. Check out the copyright page (for example on biblegateway.com) and you’ll notice that most versions only allow 500 verses (or sometimes just 250 verses) to be quoted without permission. If you want to reproduce a whole book you’ll need written permission, and if you want to make the whole Bible available you’ll certainly be paying royalties. In the case of a media presentation, this can run to tens of thousands of dollars.

Yes, there are programs out there that allow you to access different versions for your own personal use. But what if you don’t want to worry about getting permissions to quote, especially if you want to publish the Bible online on your website etc? Here’s where the Free Bible Version comes in. Through the Creative Commons license, you can use it however you want as long as you say it’s the Free Bible Version, you don’t change the text, and you don’t publish it for profit.

Is the Free Bible Version reliable? A few comments: it’s based on the Nestle-Aland Greek text, the one used by the Bible Societies. The translator, Dr. Jonathan Gallagher, has a Ph.D in Divinity from the University of St Andrews in Scotland, and has committed to working to produce the whole of the New Testament in this new Free Bible Version. Once the translation from the Greek has been made, using just the text with lexicographical assistance, it is then compared with other versions for duplication or other issues. It is not a synthesis of other existing translations, nor is it based on previous translations done by others. Nor is there any intent to produce a translation with a particular theological bias. While admitting that all translators approach the text with certain presuppositions, the Free Bible Version does not attempt to reflect the beliefs of any specific faith community.

The Free Bible Version will also take advantage of the opportunities offered by Internet publishing to make periodic updates and to develop the text. Comment is invited at info@freebibleministry.org

Finally this is a project of the Free Bible Ministry, a not-for-profit organization. While this ministry is donation-based, it does not conduct fundraising or solicit contributions. However those wishing to donate to further the translation and its promotion can do so by contacting the ministry at info@freebibleministry.org

For the e-Sword version, translation notes are included in the Free Bible Version Commentary module (FBV2.CMTX) is included.

A lot of tiles on the download page. Most versions only have one that I need to grab. So which one is it that's your actual Bible?

There is version 1 and version 2.  You want for the PC, it is the BBLX.  If for Apple, it is BBLI.  Ditto for the "commentary" translation notes.
