What is the Spoken English New Testament (SENT)?

The Spoken English New Testament (SENT) is an original translation of the New Testament from first-century Koine Greek into contemporary spoken English. Koine, the language in which the New Testament’s 27 books were written, was “common” Greek, in two senses. It was “common” because nearly everybody had it in common, and because it was the everyday, common Greek you heard on the street and read in people’s private letters. It was ordinary Greek, not elegant literary Greek. So SENT translates the New Testament into ordinary contemporary spoken English. SENT is not a paraphrase or a revision of any previous translation or version. Its aim is to be a fresh, accurate, scholarly translation from the Greek, using standard translator’s tools and prepared with constant reference to more than a dozen reputable translations. Taking into account the notes and other special features, SENT brings the reader as close to the original Greek NT texts as any widely-available contemporary translation, including those known as the most “literal.”

From the Translator

I’m convinced that the New Testament is the most powerful book ever written. It contains the Good News of Jesus Christ, which has revolutionized the lives of hundreds of millions of people. As a Christian New Testament scholar, the Spoken English New Testament has been my labor of love, to bring the New Testament to you more clearly than ever before, so that it connects with you more deeply than you ever thought it could.

Are you looking for a readable New Testament?
Have you resolved to read the New Testament every day?
Have you been getting put off by the dull, old-fashioned, stodgy language of your Bible?
Are you concerned that an easy to read version might distort or water down the text?
Are you just desperately needing to get reconnected with God?

If any of these situations describe you, then the Spoken English New Testament (SENT) is really going to help you. Here are the powerful, life-changing words of Jesus and his apostles, rendered in language that is just simple and normal. SENT achieves exceptionally high levels of accuracy and faithfulness as a translation, but without sounding old-fashioned or “churchy”. And it’s totally accessible and readable, without trying to sound “hip” or folksy.

Get ready for a treat—this is a New Testament that you are going to thoroughly enjoy reading. And not only that—you’re going to come away from nearly every reading experience with new depth of insight and understanding.

— J. Webb Mealy, SENT translator

About the e-Sword edition

This e-Sword edition was produced over the course of months with frequent contact between the translator and the uploader to make sure that the e-Sword version of the SENT meets the high standards which appear in the hard copy.

This Bible text (complete with over 6,000 footnotes) has been painstakingly prepared and formatted in order to make it the best that it can be.

The commentary file includes the text of all the 6,000+ footnotes in a very easy-to-find format.

The dictionary (referenced in the footnotes as "Bible Words") file includes 107 entries explaining some of the words which are used in the translation, as well as some of the concepts which occur that may be unfamiliar to those who are not regular Bible readers (such as "apostle" "high priest," and others).

All of these are included in one .exe file.

Help the translator by purchasing a hardcopy

The translation was financed completely by the translator, taking many years of dedicated work to complete.  Hardcopies of the book are available for sale at the SENT website. Donations are also accepted so that copies of the SENT may be given away to those who cannot afford them on their own.

Annotation letters (a b c etc.) blend with Bible text and are not linked which makes Bible text difficult to read and footnotes inaccessible. If someone could fix the module that would be great.
