I think that when willysjeepma is talking about the "firmware," he's talking about the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) System (which has replaced the BIOS chip).
So, by "Flashing" the UEFI (spoken as "u-fee" or you-fee), he installed an update of it so it would be compatible to recognize the Linux OS media system, such as Hard Drives and etc.
That's about as much as I know because I'm not a Linux PC user.

Thanks for the info. I will have to look into that as I am planning on going back to Linux Mint for my OS. MS just has way to many hiccups.
