The Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary, edited by Joseph Exell, is a practical and thorough aid for sermon (and lesson) planning, preparation, and study. Spanning 37 volumes and nearly 19,000 pages, this is one of the largest e-Sword commentaries ever created.

Written for preachers, by preachers (see list below)—anyone who teaches or studies the Word of God will profit from this expository preaching resource!

The analytical and organizational structure allows for:
  • Clear and engaging sermons and bible studies.
  • Substantial guidance on application of the Bible to the audience
  • Theological outlines of passages
  • Expository, Explanatory, Suggestive, and Critical Notes
  • Quotes from famous preachers, scholars, and authors.
  • Sermon/passage/verse illustrations.
Passage Work Flow
The passage work flow usually includes (with some variations):

Critical Notes >>>

Main Homiletics of the Paragraph >>>

Suggestive Comments on the Verses >>>

Illustrations of Verses/Passages

Note on the Editor: Joseph Exell also edited The Pulpit Commentary and Biblical Illustrator.

[Homiletics is the art of preparing sermons and preaching. Those who study homiletics seek to improve their skill at communicating biblical topics.]

A Better Layout
This presentation differs from the printed edition and other electronic editions (that seek to divide the commentary by passage or verse):

Critical Notes:

Printed: Listed separately before all comments.

Other Electronic: Listed in the first verse of a chapter (i.e. Gen. 1:1 contains critical notes on Gen. 1:1-1:31)

e-Sword: Critical Notes for each verse listed with that verse’s comments (i.e. Gen. 1:21-28 contains the Critical Notes for Gen. 1:21-28—rather than lumping the Critical Notes for whole chapter into Gen 1:1 or listed separately).

Illustrations

Printed: Listed separately after all comments.

Other Electronic: Listed in the last verse of a chapter (i.e. Exo 1:22 contains all sermon illustrations for all verses in the chapter).

e-Sword: Illustrations for each verse listed with that verse’s comments. (i.e. Exodus 1:1 contains that verse’s illustrations rather than being lumped into the last verse, Exodus 1:22)

Footnotes

Printed: Bottom of page.

Other Electronic: Missing

e-Sword: Footnotes are below paragraph where referenced

Other layout changes: The printed version saved space by combining multiple sections into one paragraph. For example, Roman numerals I. – VI. might be in one paragraph, with the numeral and heading sentence bolded. Here, we began a new paragraph between sections to avoid the lengthy paragraphs that spanned multiple pages in the printed edition.

I know the current presentation (or mix) of PC/Apple downloads is frustrating and not intuitive. Next month, when the new version of e-Sword is released, it will enable us to make a radical overhaul of the downloads area.

For now, download the apple-ipad-iphone.zip version. Unzip it. Then go to Step 4 of these instructions: http://www.e-sword.net/ipad/faq.htm

The downloads work just fine...and when you try to install them...they appear to install from the PC perspective.  PHC works fine with e-Sword on a Windows PC.  But when you install the iPad-iPhone.zip version on your iPad or iPhone (well, my iPad and my iPhone) they appear to copy over just fine, but when you open up eSword on the iPad and iPhone PHC is never there.  Since you say "Nah; it ain't broken" can you tell me what iPad and what iPhone you installed the iPad/iPhone version on and how you installed it?

I don't have an iOS device. Just a Windows 10 PC, and two Android devices (Galaxy s5 phone, and Galaxy Note Pro).

The test was purely a Download test and not an installation test. I already have the PHC installed on my PC, so there was no need to do it again.

Blessings,

Dear Joseph (Exell),

I have just downloaded your 37 volumes in an astounding only less than 30MB file.

I believe this electronic age has made many things possible with HIS help and saving many trees and ink.

Thank you very much for making this available.

I sure hope I could repay you one day your kindness but I pray that HE will protect you and continue to bless with you wisdom from above.

I know your work has blessed many and wish more will be blessed to the ends of the earth.

Amen Amen Amen.

Best regards,

Edwin

I just notices this post. True! I really did, and its been up since 2016. I either have to be blind not to have seen it, or walking around with my eyes closed. I think I'll stick with the "Blind" bit.

Any hoo, I noticed that the person who posted it, had written it to Joe Exell. Pit is that he never read the post, and for some weird reason he couldn't read. I guess it might have something to him being deader the dead. As in  having totally carked it, as in being dead.
