Dictionary of Christian Biography and Literature to the End of the Sixth Century A.D., with an Account of the Principal Sects and Heresies.

Henry Wace (Dean of Canterbury) and William Percy (church historian) compiled this extensive dictionary of over 800 early Christian figures, groups, and literature.

This very large (8 megabyte) dictionary includes the principal sects and heresies that challenged orthodox Christianity on several fronts during the early years. For anyone serious about the early church and the people who made indelible marks in its story, this is a fundamental resource.
  • Features reliable sketches of major Christian personalities of the first six centuries.
  • Analyzes the documents, creeds, and literature of the early church and its opponents.
  • Describes the principal sects and heretics of early Christianity, including discussions of the theological tendencies of these opponents.
  • Covers more than 600 years of church history.
e-Sword Version
You have the option of downloading this file in Dictionary format AND Topic format. The content is identical. e-Sword does not allow for resizing the dictionary topics display, so most entry titles scroll past the viewable window. The Topics version may be easier for some to use. The dictionary version may be more convenient.

Thanks Brother Josh!

This is a rich and wonderful resource. I got it in dictionary format, and I wanted to try it first for my eyes before downloading the topic version. In other words, I would rather have the dictionary format but didn't know if I would be able to use it with my weak eyes. I have my dictionaries on a separate tab and use it almost full screen. It works just fine at the larger font I have set. I love the index function in the dictionary format and the ability to quickly find what I'm looking for. This is tons of hard to find information in one handy resource and I highly recommend it. Thanks Brother Josh for your hard work on this.
Glad you like it! I made it as a dictionary and then I thought, why not save as a Topic file too, just an extra 2 clicks. I think maybe it does have more value as a dictionary. Topics are too easily forgotten, especially since the Reference Library does not have a "place" on the main e-Sword screen.
I feel much richer and better equipped for service as a result of this valued. resource. My gratitude is greater than can be expressed. I will send the download to our Faith College in Africa where it will no-doubt become an important part of their Church History resources.

By the way, just yesterday I sent 32 usb flash drives to Africa with e-Sword and 2.6 gigs of resource materials. Each student will be able to hear the sermons and benefit from this rich library. Pray that e-Sword might be one of the tools used to bring biblical reformation to East Africa.
Have not tried it yet but with what I have seen so far, may God bless you all. I am overwhelmed. Wish it was easy for me to donate online. Live in Nigera Thanks.
