The Leeser Old Testament (1853)
entitled: The Twenty-Four Books of the Holy Bible

by Rabbi Isaac Leeser (1806-1868)

What's New in Version 1.0 (See full changelog)

  • Uoloaded Mac/e-sword 11 version.

this file didn't download in a format that could be read....

It has it's own .exe installer. Just make sure that it places the module in the same file folder as your current e-Sword installation. It wants to default to c:/program files/esword.

If that is not the location where you have e-Sword installed and you don't change the installation path, then the module will not be available to be loaded when you start e-Sword.

As updated 2021-12-22 this provides a download to the following files:

Leeser’s Jewish Bible (1853) The Twenty-four Books of the Holy Scriptures: Carefully Translated According to the Massoretic Text, On the Basis of the English Version, After the Best Jewish Authorities; and supplied with short explanatory notes. By Isaac Leeser. Philadelphia, 1853. Publisher, Philadelphia: Printed by Sherman for A. De Sola

Isaac Leeser (December 12, 1806 – February 1, 1868) was an American Orthodox Jewish religious leader, teacher, scholar and publisher. He helped found the Jewish press of America, produced the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English, and helped organize various social and educational organizations. He is considered one of the most important nineteenth century American Jewish personalities. He was "fiercely opposed" to Reform Judaism and was regarded as one of the most important "orthodox" rabbis of his era. Leeser is regarded as a forerunner by both Modern Orthodox Judaism and Conservative Judaism.

Jewish English Bible translations are English translations of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) according to the Masoretic Text, in the traditional division and order of Torah, Nevi’im, and Ketuvim. Most Jewish translations appear in bilingual editions (Hebrew–English).

Jewish translations often reflect traditional Jewish exegesis of the Bible; all such translations eschew the Christological interpretations present in many non-Jewish translations. Jewish translations contain neither the books of the apocrypha nor the Christian New Testament.

Until the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation, the Leeser translation was the most important Jewish English translation. It was widely used in North American synagogues and reprinted in England.

Leeser’s translation is for the most part highly literal, but it does reflect traditional Jewish interpretations in some places where the rendering is not strictly literal. In Exodus 21: 6 we find the word לעלם(lit. “forever”) translated “till the jubilee.” In the footnote to Exodus 21:6 Leeser notes: Lit. "for ever;" but servitude is hereafter ('Levit. XXV.10) limited to the jubilee, which is accordingly the
eternity of bondage, beyond which it could not exist.
NOTE: Unfortunately the Biblesupport.com version does not include the footnotes. You can obtain the complete book in PDF format from this source: https:// archive.org/details/twentyfourbookso1853lees LINK: https://archive.org/...rbookso1853lees

When I open the Leeser Bible from Bible Support, in the Bible option, Deut. 4:47-49 is

Deu 4:47  And they took possession of his land, and of the land of ‘Og the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Emorites, who were on this side of the Jordan toward the rising of the sun;
Deu 4:48  From ‘Aro’er, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Chermon,
Deu 4:49

No content displayed for verse 49 of the chapter. And certain words have problems with extended characters.

However when I then use the "copy verses" then the content of the verses do display correctly, without problem, in the window.

However, when I use "copy" then some of the characters with diacritics have a problem to display correctly.

Deuteronomy 4:46-49 Leeser (46) On this side of the Jordan, in the valley opposite to Beth-peor, in the land of Sichon the king of the Emorites, who dwelt at Cheshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt; (47) And they took possession of his land, and of the land of ‘Og the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Emorites, who were on this side of the Jordan toward the rising of the sun; (48) From ‘Aro’er, which is on the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Chermon, (49) And all the plain on this side of the Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the declivities of Pisgah.

Is this a problem with e-sword version 13.0.0 for the PC? Could the Bible Support programmer team investigate the text formatting again, please? I have also reported this to Rick Meyers's website.

In reply to the above complaint by Olaf Bacon, dated November 30, 2022, Rick Meyers says, "Garbage in, garbage out. The module itself has the problem”.

It is the *.bblx file that is the problem. If you load both the *.bbli and the *.bblx into e-Sword for the PC, then the *.bbli is overwritten, by the *.bblx file. It is the *.bblx file that has faulty characters. These are for the vowels a, e, i, u with proceeding straight single quote, or smart single opening quote or smart single closing quote before one of these vowels. These characters were inserted by Rabbi Isaac Leeser in his translation into English, in 1853, to indicate that when reading the English words aloud, these vowels were to be pronounced with the long vowel sound. If you load the *.bbli file, then the problem characters are shown on screen okay.

Unfortunately the Preface, written in Philadelphia, Elul 17th, 5613, which is Sept. 20th, 1853, was not included in the e-Sword "Bible", "Information", section. The relevant part is:

"He found great difficulty about coming to a satisfactory resolution with regard to the spelling of the proper nouns. Any one the least acquainted with the manner they are  presented in the common versions and the languages of Western Europe, must know that they are very much corrupted; but they have in this shape become so much interwoven with the language of history and of daily conversation, that it would have produced endless confusion to spell them after the original manner. Hence the ordinary method had to be retained for words in constant use; but where this was not the case, a spelling more in accordance with the original has been resorted to. The j should always be pronounced as y, to accord with the Hebrew; and ia as ya. A should be sounded as long ah ; e as long a; i as long ee ; and u as ooCh stands for the Hebrew [cheth] where [tzaddi] occurs in the Hebrew, an apostrophe ' has been used for the most part ; but there are no English letters to represent these sounds exactly. For instance, " Zechariah,"

pronounce Zecharyah ; "Jehu," as Yay-hoo, &c."
"The translator will not ask that his errors and misconceptions shall be excused; but he trusts that any fault which may be discovered will be kindly pointed out to him, so that he may be able to make use of all such remarks to correct his work in a future edition ; and he for his own part will not be satisfied with what he has done, but endeavour to improve by future experience."
"Whenever words have been supplied which are not in the text, but requisite to make ibe sense clear, they have been placed in parentheses; for instance, 1 Chron. iii. 9, "(These were) all the sons of David," where there is no equivalent in Hebrew for "these were," though no sense could be made of the phrase without supplying these two words. The parenthesis is also used occasionally, but very seldom, to denote a construction, where an actual parenthesis of a whole sentence, or of one or more verses, occurs."
"The whole work has been undertaken at the sole responsibility, both mercantile and literary, of the translator. No individual has been questioned respecting the meaning of a single sentence ; and not an English book has been consulted, except Bagster's Bible, a few notes of which have been incorporated with this. The peculiarity of the style will readily indicate them. The author's name would have been appended, had it been known to the translator."

Displaying correctly for me, in PC with e-Sword version 13

In this specific entry, the ".bbli" entry displays correctly in Vedana font, on e-Sword for the PC, in e-Sword version 13.0.0. I am running Windows Specification Edition: Windows 11 Pro, Version: 22H2.

However, the ".bblx" file is corrupted, as the grave accent placed before a vowel to indicate that the vowel should be pronounced with a long sound in English, gets corrupted.

.bblx gives me:
Deut. 4:49  Here this verse does not display the text in the Bible window. However, the missing text does appear in the "Bible compare" option, and in the "Bible parallel" option.

.bbli gives me:

Deut. 4:49 is okay, and the diacritical characters appear okay, on e-Sword version 13.0.0 for the PC.

The grave accent ` [character code 96 from ASCII (decimal) in Verdana font] placed in front of a vowel a, e, i, u, represents the long sound of a letter that is not included in the English Alphabet. These corrupt the text displayed in e-Sword for the PC. Here I show what I see using the .bblx for example, and what I see using the .bbli filename.
Deut. 4:47 of ‘Og instead of of ‘Og [Verdana font]
Deut. 4:48 From ‘Aro’er  instead of From ‘Aro’er [Verdana font]

Can someone male this with the notes?
