Hastings Children

This material seems appropriate for children ages 8-12. Like the Great Texts for adults, this 6 volume set examines the Great Texts of the Bible, but from a child's perspective. (I found the text fascinating from an adult's perspective as well in what practical lessons Hastings decided to draw from the text).

Each section begins with a scripture, and Hastings uses illustrations to relate the meaning of the passage for a child's life. Hastings focuses on practical lessons and the moral of the story that children might apply to their lives.

Unlike most of the other modules on this website, this is not intended to be an exact reproduction of Hastings material. I did make a number of changes to the theology, wording, illustrations, and meaning of some passages. This was necessary to make the material understandable and appropriate for a modern child.

Because Hastings studied the classics as an undergraduate, many sections include classic poems and classic literature quotes.

e-Sword Edition
The 6 volumes translates into about 4 megabytes of text. The download page shows a self installing version (exe file) and a manual install version (zip file).

Each download file includes two e-Sword versions: 1) Commentary and 2) Reference Library. The content is identical. The only difference is the presentation (one is a commentary and the other is a Reference Library module).

In my view, this work is a great commentary module. The drawback is e-Sword lacks the ability to easily or quickly see all comments in a commentary. Thus, you can click the Book View of the commentary version to see an index of all comments for that Book of the Bible.

The Reference Library version is organized by Bible book and indented for easy reference.

What's New in Version 1.0 (See full changelog)

  • Uploaded Mac/e-sword 11 version.

I must ask: in what way did you change the theology, as well as what Hastings had said the "meaning" of the passages were?

I tried to remove anything I wouldn't want my children to read. Examples that I can recall off the top of my head...

I wouldn't want them to read about the gap theory in Genesis and how it took millions and millions of years to produce oil and coal. We now know that both can form much faster than previously thought, especially in conjunction with plate tectonics and the flood. Kids will have plenty of opportunities to hear the millions and billions of years argument with the other theory. And while the gap theory may be a good backup theory, I just don't believe it's true--it seems to be the product of western minds trying to read Hebrew poetry and fundamentally misunderstanding the nature of Hebrew poetry. There were a few other things I nitpicked like that.

I also wouldn't want my kids to read about casual tobacco use. I changed hundreds of different words like n*gger, queeer, ass, tram / tram car, monkey-boy, mite, halfpence, all sorts of British slang, and lots of words which are apparently still words but archaic now.  There was some condescending talk about other races in a playful way and that's gone now.

I found the text interesting. It's amazing how great even the poorest American children have it now, compared to children in England in the early 1900s.

He spoke of the Great War often (what we refer to as World War I), and little did he know, the carnage in the 1900s had just begun. He had no idea what was coming with World War II and the wars that followed and are even being fought today. That war really bothered Hastings, where as we've become so accustomed to wars today, it's lost its meaning. It's easy to forget that there haven't always been wars and rumors of wars on the massive scale as today. WWI was the first. I enjoyed taking a step back in time and reading how a man of his day viewed the world and its meaning, what his concerns were, etc.

Thanks.  Makes sense to me.

Excellent commentary on certain texts in different chapters of the Holy Bible. The pages in which the text has been highlighted in BLACK, behind black text, as seen through the Reference Library window, can be corrected by placing the .topx file in your personal e-sword directory, opening each page, with the Topic Editor, selecting all text on the page, (CTRL+A), and then use the e-sword edit option to highlight text with white background colour, and then resave that page. That will effectively remove the highlighted coloured black background of certain lines of text.

I will progressively work through the views from the Reference window, and the Topc Editor window, and then send a copy back to the uploader of this file, so that the Commentary pages can be updated in a similar way. Then copy your updated .topx file to overwrite the previously downloaded .topx file on your Microsoft PC.

The editing by Josh Bond in 2013 has been very well done. There are occasional typographic errors, which I will correct when I notice them.

as updated there are four module options:
[1] Hastings, James - Childrens Great Texts of the Bible.cmtx 4.57 MB
[2] Hastings, James - Childrens Great Texts of the Bible.exe 1.52 MB
[3] Hastings, James - Childrens Great Texts of the Bible.zip 2.44 MB
[4] hastings_james_-_childrens_great_texts_of_the_bible.cmti 5.2 MB

NOTE: The Zip file folder contains
[1] Hastings, James - Childrens Great Texts of the Bible.cmtx 2013-04-26
[2] Hastings, James - Childrens Great Texts of the Bible.topx 2013-04-26
NOTE: There are unfortunately some areas where the codifier provided the text highlighted with black. Black is not easy to read.

NOTE: The * exe file contains an installation wizard which will install the two same files into the selected directory file folder. These modules contain the same problem as the previous options.

NOTE: The *.cmti option has removed the highlighted black color which was obscuring the text in the Commentary module.
The *.cmti option is designed for MAC/e-Sword for PC version 11+ and later. This will run on the following versions of e-Sword:
e-Sword for the PC (https://www.e-sword.net/)
e-Sword for Android (https://www.e-sword.net/android/)
e-Sword X for the Mac (https://www.e-sword.net/mac/)
e-Sword HD for the iPad (https://www.e-sword.net/ipad/)
e-Sword LT for the iPhone (https://www.e-sword.net/iphone/)

After the successful download of the selected module you will need to copy the downloaded module into the directory file folder in which e-Sword will process your files. From the relevant e-Sword links, select the FAQ option, and read the advice of Rick Meyers, the designer of your version of e-Sword.

If you want to be able to edit these files for your own use, on a Windows PC, place a copy of the *.topx module in your user Files Location directory folder. These are excellently written, and have been carefully edited by Josh Bond. They will give you joy to listen to as you read them to yourself, or hear your child read them aloud to you.

OK, why would anyone remove or change a word because you don't like it and don't think it's OK for our children?

Would you change Gen. 19:30-38 or remove it from scripture because you do not approve of incest and would not want your child to read the story?

One last thing, how many children join this site?

Just a thought.
