Rev. Barton W. Stone: The Man Who Studied and Taught
This is another in a series of short biographies of 19th century gospel preachers, written by J.F. Burnett.
Barton W. Stone was raised in the Church of England, but upon moving to America came under the influence of a Presbyterian minister named James McGready and was ordained to preach for them. He later studied the Confession of Faith more closely and decided that much of it was unbiblical. This deeper study also caused him to renounce Calvinism and proclaim faith and obedience as the marks of Christianity. After this, he began to simply preach the Bible without creeds, and steadfastly refused to be called anything other than a Christian - no more, no less.
