William Burkitt

e-Sword Version:
9.x - 10.x

Tab Name:

Part devotional, part expository, part application, Burkitt wrote this commentary to encourage "profitable and delightful" daily Bible reading.

William Burkitt (1650-1703) was a Church of England clergyman, bible expositor, and devotional writer.

Burkitt is best known for his Bible commentary: Expository Notes with Practical Observations on the New Testament.

Volume 1: Matthew - John, was published in 1700
Volume 2: Acts - Revelation was published 1703.

This commentary contains 9 megabytes of text.

Matthew Henry wrote in the preface to his commentary that Burkitt's Exposition "met with very good acceptance among serious people" and that it would "do great service to the church." Henry said that Burkitt's Exposition was the inspiration for his own commentary on the Old Testament, to complement Burkitt's work on the New Testament.

Charles Spurgeon regarded Burkitt's commentary as a "goodly volume," and recommended "attentive perusal" of it.

Sayings Credited to Burkitt
Gifts are as gold that adorns the temple; grace is like the temple that sanctifies the gold.

He praiseth God best that serveth and obeyeth Him most: the life of thankfulness consists in the thankfulness of the life.

Look carefully that love to God and obedience to His commands be the principle and spring from whence thy actions flow; and that the glory of God and the salvation of thy soul be the end to which all thy actions tend; and that the word of God be thy rule and guide in every enterprise and undertaking. "As many as walk by this rule, peace be unto them, and mercy."

Speak not in high commendation of any man to his face, nor censure any man behind his back; but if thou knowest anything good of him, tell it unto others; if anything ill, tell it privately and prudently to himself.

Thanks to Niobi for the text.

  • Uploaded Mac/e-sword 11 version.

I am most thankful for making this old friend available. He belongs to the foremost rank of expositors. I like the way he very briefly outlines the verse and then gives application.
