About Face to Face with Tongues - A Verse by Verse Examination and Exposition On the Subject of Tongues
From the Preface: "If tongues are for today, I want them. If tongues are not for today, I do not want to be deceived. The only way for any person to be convinced is if they are willing take the word of God, examine it honestly, and stand 100%..."

Dr. Younce believes if Tongues are from the Spiritual world, they're either of God or of Satan--it must be either one or the other. Dr. Younce makes a compelling case that Tongues are not for today. Dr. Younce concludes that Tongues were needed in New Testament times to authenticate the message and the messenger, and to spread the gospel to languages that those preaching could not speak. Dr. Younce examines the usual scriptures used to justify tongues, including Acts, 1 Corinthians, and Mark and shows how everything about their usage then differs today--in practice, in motive, and in circumstance. The author concludes that today's use of Tongues is not Biblical.

If you don't want to read the whole book, you can read the final chapter which presents a nice summary of Younce's arguments and the questions Tongues advocates must answer about Scripture.

From the opening chapter:

"There are four reasons the tongues of today cannot be that of Pentecost:

Wrong Motive. The languages spoken on Pentecost were spoken for God's glory. You do not find in Act_2:1-47 where any of those that spoke in tongues (languages) ever used this to judge the spirituality of other persons or themselves. Tongues advocates claim this for their glory as a sign of their mature spirituality. Yes, they say it comes from God--praising Jesus! But, in reality, they glory in their own manifestation of speaking in tongues as "evidence" of the Spirit's working in them.

Wrong Purpose. On the Day of Pentecost, God wanted His word preached so that all would understand, regardless of nationality. That was God's purpose and He accomplished it. Is this the purpose of tongues speakers today? If so, why do they not go to the foreign fields with God’s Word and not waste time training in the language schools. If they want all nations to hear, as the Lord did, why are they not preaching in tongues to the various nationalities abroad? (I understand those who actually try this are soon home again! ) No, their purpose is not that of the Lord’s, nor do their activities match what took place on Pentecost.

Wrong Manifestation. Of all the nationalities present on the Day of Pentecost, each one understood. I have never been in a tongues meeting yet where anybody understood, let alone those speaking a foreign language. Something is wrong. The problem: It is not the same thing that took place on the Day of Pentecost.

Wrong Spirit. It is either the Spirit of the Lord of the spirit of the Anti-Christ. You may say, "This is too narrow-minded." Do you remember what the Lord told the Church of Laodicea in Rev_3:15-16"

The old excuse!!!

re:  "Dr. Younce believes if Tongues are from the Spiritual world, they're either of God or of Satan--it must be either one or the other. Dr. Younce makes a compelling case that Tongues are not for today."

Yup, obviously Satan is spinning his wheels, throwing up an imitation of something that true scholars of spiritual truth have long ago discounted as false.

From the Forward

"If tongues are for today, I want them. If tongues are not for today, I do not want to be deceived. The only way for any person to be convinced is if they are willing take the word of God, examine it honestly, and stand 100% on "Thus saith the Lord"!"

Mr. Younce has done what most typically do when trying to prove their point. He claims to go into this study hoping to find the truth. One cannot find truth unless he is willing to search with an openness to it.If your views are slanted one way or another you can always slant the scriptures to your point of view. But if you truly search for the truth you will find that the scriptures are not slanted. They are truth, All of them. If you truly want to know if tongues are for today then I urge you not to take what a man has written out of his own need to prove himself a scholar. Search the word for yourself with an attitude that says I am not here to prove or disprove anything I just want the truth. I will not trust in so called scholars but in the written Word of God. If you seek the truth you will find it.

Also take note that this author contradicts himself greatly. This is why I say he has not truly searched the scriptures for the truth on this subject. Rather he has searched to prove HIS point.

From the preface

"In my examination of tongues, verse by verse from the Bible, I have purposely refrained from quoting the publications of tongues advocates, and then refuting their claims by Scripture. I felt it is far more important to first examine the Scriptures, and let Them speak for Themselves. The Christian who will study the Scriptures, honestly and sincerely, will be able, by themselves, to refute any claim of those who advocate tongues are for today. This eliminates the need to saturate this book with their claims."

From the Last Chapter

"If the tongues advocates are correct in this assumption which Kenneth Hagen has stated in one of his books, "...every Christian should speak in tongues...", "

"Allow me to illustrate from a book written by one of the leading tongues advocates today. He listed several reasons why every believer should speak in tongues. Here is his quote of Scripture to support one of those reasons, "and these signs shall follow them that believe ... they shall speak with new tongues." (Mar_16:17). Now if you read only his book and did not check the Word of God you could very well be deceived. I will now quote from God's Word all of Mar_16:17-18 :"

And here I will Quote a scripture to you who want Truth. And yes he used it as well.

2Ti 2:15 " Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

It is your obligation to study the Word for yourself. Do not take my word or anyone else's for it.

I believe in commentaries and books or I wouldn't be on this page. But I also believe they are simply for diversity and to provoke thought. They are not Scripture.

I am not looking for an argument. So you need not try to provoke a response form me. I have said my piece and that is all I will say on this matter.

I've come across this kind of argument over the years, and find them of having no significance of any form, shape or size, and totally boring.

Blessings,

The arguments are fallacious.  The author sets up a straw man and then knocks it down.  He misrepresents the Continuationist position and then proceeds to misinterpret the Scriptures he uses for proof texts. It is an example of poor exegesis so common to the Cessationist position.
