This module is available in two different formats; you will not need both (unless you're a collector...).
**If you prefer to utilize a commentary on one book of the Bible in the Commentary Window, download the "...CMTX.zip" file.
**If you prefer to utilize a commentary on one book of the Bible in the Reference Viewer (my preference), download the "...TOPX.zip" file.

This is one of the best commentaries on the Book of Proverbs ever written. Originally delivered sermonically, they constitute 98 "lectures" (we would refer to them as "sermons") on almost every verse of the book. They are not technically written; they are devotionally written with technical accuracy (a rare blend in Biblical exposition - especially for 1869).

From Cyril Barber's The Minister's Library (this is one of only two Christian works he has asterisked on "Proverbs"):

Contains some of the finest material for preachers ever produced on this portion of God's Word. Rich, insightful, practical.

This massive work was originally published in 3 large Volumes. It is fantastic for the expositor! I highly recommend you add one of these versions to your eSword library. When you're looking for illumination in the Book of Proverbs, you'll click this module open again and again and....

Synopsis of "Lectures on the Book of Proverbs" by Ralph Wardlaw

Ralph Wardlaw’s "Lectures on the Book of Proverbs" offers a comprehensive and insightful theological and moral exposition of one of the most profound books of wisdom literature in the Bible. Wardlaw’s approach is characterized by a blend of biblical exegesis, practical application, and moral reflection, making the work both intellectually rigorous and spiritually edifying.

The book of Proverbs, as Wardlaw expounds, is fundamentally a collection of divine wisdom intended to guide individuals toward a life of righteousness, prudence, and godliness. Wardlaw emphasizes that Proverbs is not merely a collection of pithy sayings but a divine manual for practical living, rooted in the fear of the Lord. He underscores that the wisdom it imparts is applicable across all ages and social contexts, serving as a moral compass for personal conduct and societal harmony.

Wardlaw begins his lectures by exploring the origin and nature of wisdom as presented in Proverbs. He highlights that true wisdom is divine in origin, beginning with the fear of the Lord, which is the foundational principle of moral life. Wisdom, therefore, is not merely intellectual knowledge but a moral virtue that manifests in righteous actions, humility, and reverence for God. Wardlaw stresses that the pursuit of wisdom is a lifelong endeavor, requiring humility, diligence, and a teachable spirit.

In subsequent sections, Wardlaw delves into various thematic elements of Proverbs. He examines the contrast between the wise and the foolish, emphasizing that the wise person seeks instruction, correction, and understanding, while the fool despises rebuke and is characterized by stubbornness and moral blindness. Through this, Wardlaw underscores the importance of humility and the rejection of pride as essential virtues for acquiring wisdom.

A significant portion of the lectures is dedicated to practical moral topics such as honesty, integrity, diligence, humility, and self-control. Wardlaw advocates that these virtues are essential for personal success and societal well-being. He draws heavily on specific Proverbs to illustrate how these virtues can be cultivated and practiced in daily life.

Wardlaw also explores the importance of family and social relationships, highlighting Proverbs’ guidance on parenting, friendship, and community. He emphasizes that wise conduct in these areas fosters stability and peace within society, aligning with the biblical view that individual morality impacts the collective well-being.

Throughout the lectures, Wardlaw maintains a strong emphasis on the spiritual dimensions of wisdom. He asserts that true wisdom leads to a life that is pleasing to God and ultimately results in eternal blessing. The importance of moral discipline, prayer, and dependence on divine guidance is recurrently stressed.

In conclusion, Wardlaw’s "Lectures on the Book of Proverbs" serves as a thorough and devout reflection on biblical wisdom. It underscores that the principles found in Proverbs are timeless, practical, and essential for personal sanctification and social harmony. His work remains a valuable resource for scholars, pastors, and lay readers seeking to understand and apply the moral teachings of this profound biblical book.
