This translation seeks to make the 21st century reader understand the Bible in the way that the original readers would have understood it. Another feature of this translation is the constant identification of plural pronouns. In modern English, "you" can be one or many. In this translation, you will frequently see "you {pl}" to indicate that more than one person is being addressed.

From the translator:

This version is fairly literal, but takes into account the cultural insights of the Context Group scholars. The context group takes many of the concepts in the New Testament and explains how they would be viewed in terms of first century Middle Eastern culture.

For example, “Hesed” in terms of the Middle East has less to do with the emotion we call “love” and more to do with family responsibilities, obligations, and loyalties. For the Bible to say that God shows “hesed” to his people does not necessarily mean “everlasting love” as we would define it, but instead “family loyalty.” In short, God regards us as part of His family and takes on, and expects in response, famial obligation in return. In the same way, “faith” has more to do with trust and “faithfulness” than it does to belief or intellectual assent.

While I think it is admirable to include some missing translation nuances like the difference between the plural “you” in Greek, which was marked in the KJV by “ye” (plural) and “thou” (singular), but doubts rise after researching what the “Context Group” is all about. On Wikipedia, we find, “The Context Group is an international team of scholars that merges historical exegesis and the social sciences to interpret the Bible in its social and cultural contexts. It initially organized in 1986 as the "Social Facets Seminar," headed by John H. Elliott as Chair, meeting in conjunction with The Jesus Seminar under the direction of Robert W. Funk and the Westar Institute. In 1989 it broke ties with the Jesus Seminar and reorganized in Portland, Oregon, as The Context Group, A Project on the Bible in its Social and Cultural Environment.” Yet more troubling is the apparent anti-Semitic controversy with a leading member, “Founding member of the context group Bruce J. Malina has come under criticism for his views on the Israel/Palestine conflict and how it has influenced his scholarship. While on the one hand, he takes a firm stance against the modern state of Israel, going as far as to deny the Semitic ancestry of modern Israelis, on the other hand, Malina often ends up buying into Zionist discourses on the meaning of the term ‘Jew’ or ‘Judean’ (hoi ioudaioi), arguing that it refers to 'the land'.” Source: Myles, Robert; James Crossley (Dec 2012) in The Bible and Interpretation: "Biblical Scholarship, Jews and Israel: On Bruce Malina, Conspiracy Theories and Ideological Contradictions".

The difference between faith (pístis), and believe (pisteúō), is faith is a noun, and believe is a verb. The words can interchange. For instance;

  • Joh 3:16  "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life
  • Joh 3:16  "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever has faith in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life

Both of these would be correct, both mean trust, and neither is mere intellectual assent.

Just to give this a bit more clarity to what you said:

Belief and Faith are nouns, and both words have the are the same in the Greek. There is no difference, and therefore I agree with your take that,

Both of these would be correct, both mean trust, and neither is mere intellectual assent.

Where those who do think there is a difference, I tend to regard that as making a word to be more hyped up in its meaning than what it actually is. Sort of super spiritualizing the word.

You are correct in regard to the word believe is a verb. That said it is the verb for both Belief and Faith due to the fact that these two words have exactly the same meaning. The only thing that goes against the word Belief, is that it really doesn't sound religious or spiritual enough.

Blessings,
