WOMEN OF THE BIBLE
EVE OF THE OLD TO THE MARYS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.
BY P. C. HEADLEY.
Phineas Camp Headley was born in Walton, New York on June 24, 1819. He earned a law degree and then began studying theology at the seminary at Auburn, New York. Pastor Headley ministered in both Presbyterian and Congregational churches.
Headley wrote for the “Christian Parlor Magazine,” “The New York Observer,” “The New York Tribune,” and “The Boston Traveler,”. Historical and Descriptive Sketches of the Women of the Bible was published in 1850. Over the next thirty years, Headley wrote many more biographical works. Phineas Headley died in 1903 at the age of 84.
Headley covers nearly all the heroic and distinguished women of the Bible, from Eve to the Marys of the New Testament, in chronological order. Headley writes a biographical and character sketch of each woman, while weaving major themes of the Bible through each sketch. Obviously a skilled story teller, Headley tells not only what was, but what might have been, by looking at the Bible and the manners and customs of that day.
