For over a century, Thayer's has been lauded as one of the best New Testament lexicons available. Both accessible and thorough, it is a work suited for the student of New Testament Greek. Thayer's provides dictionary definitions for each word and relates each word to its New Testament usage and categorizes its nuances of meaning. Its exhaustive coverage of New Testament Greek words, as well as its extensive quotation of extra-biblical word usage and the wealth of background sources consulted and quoted, render Thayer's an invaluable resource.

Isn't there already a Thayer's (official) module?  What is the difference between this one and that one?  Thanks.

Hi Brad,

If I'm asking the plain obvious question, please forgive me.

Have you compared this one with the official e-Sword one? Would be interested in your findings, if any.

Blessings,

I downloaded this edition of Thayer, and I am very impressed with the work that has gone into it. So, good job on that.

Having said that, I think that if this resource is to be used to its fullest capacity a couple of things, I believe, needs to be done, of which at the moment, I think it falls short of.

  • Where actual Greek is used in the main body of the text, that either or both a transliterated word is given, and/or a corresponding Strong's Reference number is given.
  • Due to the fact the e-Sword official version is referenced to the TDNT (Theological Dictionary of the New Testament), I think this should be included.

OK, reasons for these changes and/or additions:

  • Basically not very many people can read Greek, let alone understand it. And I don't think I am wrong in my assertion here. And its for this reason, I believe it would be more helpful to make this dictionary more accessible to a wider audience.
  • Would give a far greater clarity of understanding of the meaning and the nuances of the Greek, and be able to get a far greater and better understanding and comprehension of the Greek grammar.

There are a couple of other reasons I have which I could put in, but I think the above two would express them as well.

With all that said, done and dusted, in comparison to other Greek NT Dictionaries/Lexingtons, I think this edition is pretty good, and I'd give this one a score out of 10 ... a 7.

Blessings,

For the one download the module has the name "Thayer's Unabridged.dctx". It is ok in the installer version though.

I removed the Apostrophe so if that was what was causing DL problems for some I hope it solves that

May YAH bless you for sharing this wonderful resource! Thank you!

Won't work for My Sword for Android. Downloaded, placed into My Sword Dictionary directory, and renamed to "thayers.dct.mybible". However, when I then ran My Sword, it gives an error. Maybe because it's a dctx, instead of dct format? Downloaded and installed great for E-Sword. Would like it better if the font style formatting was removed. A wonderful tool.

A good resource but it does tend to lean toward the Calvinist understanding of some words.

There is a continuing programmer error.
Thayer's Unabridged Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament 0.3
This is at http://www.biblesupp...-new-testament/
The download is at http://www.biblesupp...-new-testament/
PROBLEM The Download files are named as Thayer's Unabridged.DCTX and Thayers Unabridged.exe
REQUEST Please change the filetype to lower-case small letters. Please remove the ampersand and the hash and the 39 and the semicolon in the file name.
The first download file presented to the PC has the most unorthodox filename, as Thayer's Unabridged.DCTX Please change both filenames to Thayer's Unabridged.dctx
Then resave them, and recreate both download modules.

HOW BOTH HAVE CURRENT PROBLEMS
The first can be saved. When clicked on it does pull up the e-Sword Module Installer from C:\e-Sword Module Installer\moduleinstaller.exe but that then gets indigestion with the ALL CAPITAL filetype .DCTX. If you change the filetype to ".dctx" and click Thayer's Unabridged.dctx then this is processed correctly, and is listed in the tab Options, Resource settings, as "Thayer's Unabridged Greek - english Lexicon of the New Testament". Notice, the word "english" is displaying without capital initial letter. If you hover the pointer over the filename, in e-Sword Resources Dictionary window, it shows as Thayer's Unabridged [Thayer's Unabridged.dctx]

The second download file presents the filename Thayers Unabridged.exe
When run this saved the content, without identifying the filename, which is found as Thayer's Unabridged.DCTX and was successfully saved into C:\Program Files(x86\e-Sword\Thayer's Unabridged.DCTX but is not listed under resources. Here again the ALL CAPITALS probably cause problems so that it is not identified by the e-Sword application version 13.0.0 and therefore this is NOT listed in the e-Sword in the tab Options, Resource settings.

There is a third option, to download from Dictionaries, inside e-Sword, download option, as Thayer Lexicon, which is listed, and can be accessed, but where is this file actually saved?

Please request an administrator to rename both files, as Thayer's Unabridged Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, with filename Thayer's Unabridged.dctx and to recreaate the exe option, and resave to Bible Support.

It is difficult to work on rtf files due to not being able to visualize Greek or Hebrew words but rather just seeing them in code.  In working with the rtf file from this module I observe a lack of \lang codes to differentiate Greek from Hebrew.  I am working on converting this file to html for a thayer_unabridged.lexi file which will hopefully improve the readability and make it easier to correct errors.  This dctx file has many errors in the code but is a good base for beginning on a better version.
