Opportunities lost by sodom & gomorrah -- Part 1

By david psalms, 29 May 2016 · 2,206 views

Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

GOD never judged anyone in BIBLE without giving them ample time to repent, providing opportunities for salvation. only after ignoring/exhausting all such chances given by GOD, HE sends HIS judgement. GOD is same yesterday, today and tomorrow. HE did not change HIS loving attitude either in NT or OT. HE is long suffering in OT as much as in NT. Not every time GOD sends a prophet to prophesy in the land. HE speaks through many circumstances. They may not be having BIBLE like us. But we see the accounts of people living godly life in their times even if they too do not have the BIBLE in their hands. when we look at the doom of sodom and gomorrah, we may think GOD has not given them enough time or sent a prophet like Jonah in the case of nineveh. But GOD gave much more time to sodom and gomorrah than nineveh. it was written in 2 peter that these cities were examples for how GOD deals with sinners. by examining the story of these twin cities we can get some insight into the ways GOD deals with sinners.

2Pe 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;

We see in this series how HE has given that time and the opportunities lost by the people of sodom and gomorrah.

1. sodom and gomorrah ignored their GOD given prosperity
if we see the mention of sodom and gomorrah in BIBLE in genesis chapter 13 verse 10 it was written that

Gen 13:10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

The land was compared to the garden of eden and to the most prosperous nation of the time egypt. in the times of genesis we see people fleeing to egypt whenever there is famine in their lands. just 2 cities given the comparison to the super power nation of their time. GOD has blessed the land with such abundance. The people ignored the prosperity and resources given by GOD to them and became wicked by giving way to pride in their hearts. The wealth and opportunity they have gave sense of self security than believing and being thankful to GOD. not even a single person in those twin cities thought of "what have we done to be so prosperous among all other near by cities?". Being the descendants of canaan these lands were under a curse by what was said through Noah according to Gen 9:25. Inspite of this GOD loved them by giving the best of the land. In those days water channels were not made by men. they were natural. HE loved them. HE never hated them. The very same attitude HE is following from generation to generation. The actions of sodom and gomorrah people forced the judgement of GOD on those cities.

Surely the people might have known about the curse of Noah through their fore fathers. instead of repenting and turning to GOD they developed an attitude of rebellion towards GOD. we see this evidently from Gen 10 when their genealogy was mentioned. we dont know from when they were exceedingly wicked in the eyes of GOD but for the first time we see this in gen 13:13.

Gen 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly

The destruction of the cities took place in the 19th chapter. by taking age of Abraham into consideration i hope it is not less than 20 years GOD waited before destroying sodom and gomorrah even though their sins were qualified enough for judgement. GOD's love and patience was expressed to them for those many years even after they were labeled by GOD as sinners "exceedingly".
