The Great Debate: Science vs God (?) - Part 1

Apologetics / Evangelism Devotional
Let me start by saying that there is no debate in my mind. Science is simply man's attempt at trying to explain and quantify things we don't understand. Sometimes it works - but sometimes it doesn't. Hey, we're just not as smart as God is.

I suppose I have always had an appreciation for the things of science, but that has never undermined my faith. Some of the greatest scientific minds in history were believers, and they did not attempt to refute the existence of God, but had a true appreciation for His creation, and simply were trying to grasp the way things worked.

Numbers And Other Bits

In the case of mathematics...  True, If it weren't for math the world we live in would be very different. You would not be reading this text, because it took a lot of math to make all of the technology possible. But the scientists are usually trying to convince us that man has made all this possible. I think the bible calls that pride. Nope. God was the inventor of numbers and everything having to do with them. He created a universe that was orderly and gave us a capacity to discover some things (but not everything) and use them. He knows exactly what He's doing, even if we don't.

'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. ' (Isa 55:9)

The Theory Of Evolution

This still seems to be gaining  ground, but that shouldn't be surprising because we are doing a great job of pushing God out of our schools and other institutions. It is a 'theory' and has never been proven scientifically. If you really start digging into the science involved you will probably find as I have that it doesn't even make sense. For example, there are many functions involved in the inner workings of humans and other life that are actually dependent on other functions, and to conclude that they could possibly have come into existence at the same time isn't logical. Unless they were 'created' that way. Sorry, Mr. Darwin.

'For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.'  (1Co 3:19)

The Big Bang

This is probably my favorite topic to watch. It seems that scientists have made great progress in understanding and being able to explain the creation of the whole universe. They can, in theory,  track it's formation through all of time - back to the beginning, the very moment after everything came into being - but that's where the road ends. 'Well, maybe if we just come up with a few more theories, and re-calculate the way everything is connected, and add a few gazillion (or pick any number) more years it will all work out.' Hmmmm.... maybe it's time to admit defeat.

'The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork.'  (Psa 19:1)

~dogfish, 1.18.19 (revised)

For myself, God is in expansion and always has been and will continue in the same.  Science/mankind has been revealed in time and space these mathematical bits and pieces of God, although little to no credit is given to God.  Atoms and sub-atomic particles have always been there, will continue to be there in what ever form they occur.  We are finite creatures created by an Infinite Creator, Who stepped into our time and space for a bit to show us the way.  We are left with His printed Word that is full of Spiritual ideas, much in symbolic correspondences that can if we let it, speak to our spirit and elevate us into the eternal and His Infinite reality.  Scientific examination of the universe and its properties at best satisfies the five senses and nothing more.  Continued scientific examinations that do not satisfy only seem to not feed our senses, leaving us hungering for what we really need.

On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.  That is, to love God with all of your heart and soul and to love the neighbor as yourself.

Well said. Thanks for your comment.
